engineeringCentral takes on D&D Automation

Our robots versus theirs

As part of the grade 10 engineering class, students competed with professional engineers from D & D Automation in a robotics challenge. Working in groups of 2 or 3, Central students were given 3 class periods to design, build, and program a robot that could follow a winding track that led to a set of stairs that they then needed to climb. D & D gave a group of their engineers the same amount of time to design, build, and program their own robot to complete the same tasks. On Tuesday, the challenge came to fruition with a visit to the Stratford D & D office. The Stratford Beacon Herald and Snap Perth were on hand to cover the event.

Despite the fact that none of our robots successfully completed the entire course, some of them completed sections, and by doing so, students learned lots about mass, weight, gears, torque, clearance, resistance, collaboration, and so much more.

We hope to have another challenge next year and teach the pros a thing or two!
